Another day canvassing and some interesting conversations on the doorstep - the next government simply must do better.

And this evening I attended an excellent talk by Maria Bridson on immigration. It’s the second talk of hers I’ve attended, and I come away more frustrated each time.

We need to be careful that this debate does not become an attack on the people who come here to work, contribute and make the Island their home, but government does need to take responsibility for the system it has created and the problems associated with those policies.

We need people in government who are scanning the horizon, anticipating the consequences of policy rather than constantly trying to fix problems after they have occurred. And we need to deal honestly with the historic issues that have been allowed to build up.

The next administration is going to have some difficult and uncomfortable conversations. We should not shy away from them.

The Isle of Man needs an immigration policy designed around the Island’s capacity, infrastructure, housing and long-term interests. We need controlled, sustainable growth, not growth for growth’s sake.
